The Delta State Police Command has dismissed and arraigned in court in Asaba the state capital, an Inspector of Police, Inspector Ubi Ebri who allegedly shot dead one Onyeka Ibe recently in the state. In a press statement signed by the Delta State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe said the dismissed Inspector was today arraigned 19th April 2023 before Asaba Magistrate Court on a remand proceedings for the murder of the deceased after the Command had concluded its orderly room trial at the state headquarters.
According to the statement, the court ordered that the suspect be remanded at the Ogwashi -Uku Correctional Centre while the case file be sent to Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice and prosecution of the suspect by the office of the DPP.
Part of the statement reads:”The dismissed Inspector was today arraigned 19/4/2023 before Asaba Magistrate Court on a remand proceedings for the murder of Onyeka Ibe. The court ordered that the suspect be remanded at the Ogwashi- Uku Correctional Centre while the case file be sent to Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice and prosecution of the suspect by the office of the DPP”.
The statement said, the Command has therefore tasked officers and men to uphold the tenets of professional policing in the discharge of their duties with respect to fundamental human rights of all citizens in line with the provisions of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), just as it hopes that this will serve as a deterrent to other Police officers.
Recall that one Onyeka Ibe was allegedly shot dead on the 5th April, 2023 by one Inspector Ubi Ebri attached to Area Command patrol team while stop and search duty along Ugbolu-illah Road consequent upon which, the Command had earlier promised the deceased’s family and concerned members of the public that justice would be done as regards the matter as it would not be swept under the carpet.
