The Principal, College of Commerce,Warri, in Warri South Local Government Area Delta State, Mrs. Oyibo E. Queen has posited that games are essential part of school’s curricular activities as they provide room for the well-being of the students just as she said; it is through sports that Nigerians speak with one voice. The erudite Principal stated this at the school’s 56th Annual Inter-house sports competition which was held in the school’s premises on Friday.
According to her, it is because of the importance of sporting activities ,the federal ministry of education in line with the National Policy of Education deemed fit that sports are organized within the school, between other schools within and outside the zones.
She said:”Games are essential part of the school’s curricular activities provided for the wellbeing of the students”.
Mrs Queen said, sports encourage co-operation among students, help to discover the talents in students which can be harnessed; they make it possible to assess the students’ psychomotor learning domain just as they encourage students’ team spirit. According to her, it is because of this, the school has resolved to engage the students in inter-house sports competitions.
She said:”We resolve in College Of Commerce, Warri to combine education and sports for our students which has made us to carve a niche for ourselves in recent times”. According to her, because of the involvement of the students in the sports, the students of the school are shinning in field of Athletics and football to the glory of God.
Mrs. Queen said for the school to do very well in sports, the school needs the support of both individuals and corporate bodies as regards sponsorship by providing sporting equipment such as trophies, outside table tennis board, football and boots as well as cash (money) to enable the school meet up these teething challenges saying, as one of the areas Nigerians speak with one voice is sports. The education expert said, apart from the above, the school does not have library and ICT centre to enhance effective teaching and learning.
She said:”Those of us in government and corridors of powers should help this college that is as old as 75 years as the school needs your help dearly”.
The Principal used the medium express gratitude to Mrs Rose Ezewu Hourable Commissioner, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Asaba, Chief Mrs. C. Etaluku, Executive Chairman, Post Primary Education Board (PPEB) Asaba, Mrs Harienta Obiegba, Chief Inspector of Education(CIE), Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Warri Field Office,Warri, Mrs. Onorien Arawore, Director, PPB Zonal Office for their support so far to see that the runs smoothly in all areas. The Principal did not forget to thank the distinguished members of ANCOPSS, Colleagues residents, members of COCOSA,PTA Chairman, parents, media personnel, and the security men and the entire students for various roles to see that the event was a huge success.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Amadi RC, MD/CEO, Amareg Global thanked the school to have been able to organize the programme for the day. He charged the school authority to inculcate the right discipline on the students just as he called on parents and guidance to complete the efforts of the school authority to ensure children are not only provided learning materials to enhance their learning but inculcate the right moral values on their children to become better persons in the society.
The highlights of the inter -house sports which featured six houses which are: Blue, Red ,Purple,Pink, Green, and Yellow House saw Yellow House emerging as overall winner just as prizes were presented to them amidst cheers.
