Barely some hours to the nationwide hunger protest billed to take place on 1st August to 10th August 2024, a non-governmental organization under the auspices of Concerned Delta Youths, Delta State, said engaging in the hunger protest would not do the nation any good as it may be hijacked by hoodlums to wreck havoc to already infrastructure in the country.
Addressing members of Nigeria Union of Journalists at Press Centre in Warri, the Director General of the body, Activist Kelvin Ejemudo said the atmosphere is charged and tensed for the billed protest. He therefore called on Deltans especially the youths to shelve it. He cautioned against the destruction of Government’s property should it hold adding that, the youths must be law abiding and peaceful. The group called on the security agencies to exercise caution to ensure that protesters are not molested but accorded their due place according to the law of the land. His words:”‘The security personnel must be law abiding, it is not enough to see youths gather and storm them and say they are planning protest, he that alleges must prove it”.
According to the Director General of the group, from all indications, the proposed protest has yielded positive results as the Federal Government, within these few days when the proposed nationwide protest rented the air, it has started to improve on the economy of the country especially in the area of Naira against Dollars, among others.
According to the Director General who was flanked by Comrade Kelly Akima Umukoro, the body’s Secretary and other members of the body said,the Government of the day should alleviate the suffering of the people by rolling out more palliatives to cushion the effects of the harshship on the people. He said, Federal Government should not relax yet but should ensure that the Warri sea ports work, Warri and Kaduna refineries are in full operation to enable the people afford the fuel to save them from the untold harshship.
He said, as a group, they would not be party to the protest just as he called on the youths to shun the proposed nationwide protest and engage the Government in dialogue to pave room for peace and sustainable progress. His words:” We will not be party to those to destroy what Government has built over the years rather, we will part of stakeholders for constructive dialogue, a round table negotiation where no life will be lost”
