The Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, Prof Andy Ogochukwu Egwunyenga, has been honoured with an Award for Excellence in Public Service and Educational Administration by the management of Delta Printing and Publishing Corporation, Asaba, publisher of the Pointer Newspaper. According to the press statement signed by Patrick Ijeh Deputy Director, Ceremonials, Information, and Public Relations, Delta State University Abraka, the award was presented to the Vice Chancellor during a colourful celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Pointer Newspaper at Grand Hotel, Asaba, on Monday.
Speaking during the presentation of the award, the Management of Delta Printing and Publishing Corporation, Asaba, said it decided to honour Prof. Egwunyenga because of his distinguished career as a teacher, activist, Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku (2007 to 2011) and Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka (from 2019 to 2024). According to the organization, Prof. Egwunyenga as a Vice-Chancellor, he is credited with achieving full accreditation for all programmes offered at the university which significantly enhanced staff and students’ welfare and elevated the institutions’ national and international standing.
According to the organization, these efforts resulted in the University’s ranking as the 23rd best among all universities in Nigeria, the 3rd best among state universities, and the top state university in the South-South and South-East regions. Accrding to the organization, under his (Prof. Egwunyenga’s) leadership, Delta State University also became the first Nigerian University to adopt a policy on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education.
While addressing Journalists after the award, Prof. Egwunyenga expressed gratitude to God for the grace to contribute his quota to the development of public service and education at different levels as teacher, researcher, unionist and Chief Executive and head polytechnic and a university. He promised to continue to contribute to the overall development of the public service and the education sector even after he leaves office as Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, on November 30, 2024.
The Vice Chancellor was accompanied to receive the award by a delegation of top management staff of the university, friends and well-wishers amongst whom are the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. (Mrs) Rosemary Ngozi Okoh, Provost of Oleh Campus, Prof. Elo Ibagere, Dean of Postgraduate School, Prof. Suny Awhefedaa and the University Orator and Director of Ceremonials, Information and Public Relations, Prof. (Mrs) Enajite Eseoghene Ojaruega.
