The Chairman and Managing Director, Chevron Nigeria Limited, Jim Swartz said Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition is pivotal in the promotion of chemistry as a subject and education generally in Delta State. The Chevron boss made this known during the 2025 Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Awards Competition organized in Petroleum Training Institute(PTI) Effurun, Delta State, over the weekend.
In a press statement signed by Olusoga Oduselu, General Manager, Corporate Affairs of the organization, and made available to newsmen, Jim Swartz said the organization is proud to be associated with the competition as the company is proud to be sole sponsor of the competition in the state since 1992. According to Chevron boss who was represented at the event, the organization is particularly proud based on the brilliant performances of past awardees in science- related disciplines both locally and internationally.
Part of the statement reads:” We are delighted to witness the sustained commitment to the study of chemistry, as demonstrated by the outstanding performance of students in this year’s competition. Chevron, through the NNPCL/CNL JV, remains proud to be the sole sponsor of the Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition in Delta State since 1992. Our investment in education is motivated by the remarkable achievements of past awardees, many of whom have excelled in science-related disciplines both locally and internationally.”
According to the statement, Chevron’s commitment to education aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and the Nigerian National Policy on Education as the company would continue to invest in quality education through infrastructure, manpower development programmes, and scholarships, fostering self-worth, societal growth, and sustainable development.

The statement further said, the organization’s gesture and unwavering support for education was acknowledged and appreciated in several goodwill messages from attendees. The event which featured representatives of the Delta State Ministry of Education, the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), dignitaries from Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE) and Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), teachers, students, and members of the press climaxed with the presentation of plaques, certificates, and other benefits to excelling students.
The coveted first prize was awarded to Omazuwa Enousakhala Samuel from St. Augustine College, Oghara, who distinguished himself among participants from across Delta State.
