The Governor of Delta State, Rt (Hon) Sherrif Oborevwori, has charged the governing councils of the state-owned universities to work towards attaining greater financial autonomy for the institutions. Governor Oborevwori stated this in Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, during the inauguration of the second Governing Councils for the Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba, Southern Delta University, Ozoro, and the University of Delta, Agbor.
The State Governor and Visitor to the universities pointed out that while the state government will continue to support its four state-owned universities, the governing councils should not rely on it entirely for funding. He challenged them to pursue social significant innovations which they can market to private investors to generate money and augment the state government’s huge investment in education, particularly in the nine state-owned tertiary institutions. Enumerating these investments, Governor Oborevwori revealed that the state government has approved the construction of two 480-capacity hostels for each of the nine tertiary institutions.
He also announced the payment of the enhanced salary package for lecturers of the four state-owned universities with effect from August, 2026 while their non-teaching counterparts will be paid from September, 2026. He congratulated the new governing council members, describing them as tested and trusted policy makers, selected on the basis of their integrity, resourcefulness and team spirit. Governor Oborevwori charged them to discharge their duties of overseeing the management of the universities with unity of purpose and accountability in the spirit of corporate governance, guided by the laws establishing the universities. He called on them to shun nepotism, tribalism and favouritism, to be firm and fare to all staff and students in their respective institutions, and to sustain the state government’s zero tolerance for cultism, thuggery, sexual harassment, examination malpractice and other anti-social vices plaguing universities and the society at large.
Speaking shortly after the inauguration, the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Delta, Agbor, Prof Victor Peretomode, thanked God and the Delta State Governor for the opportunity to continue to serve humanity. He promised to explore his wealth of experience as former Federal Commissioner representing Delta State on the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, in the discharge of his duties in order to take the young university to enviable heights.
On his part, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Delta, Agbor, Prof Eric Chiedum Eboh, expressed deep appreciation to God and the Visitor to the University for appointing seasoned high profile administrators from within and outside the academia as members of the university’s Governing Council. He noted that the university is blessed to have two former Vice Chancellors, Prof Victor Peretomode and Prof Ben Oghojafor, former Permanent Secretary and Accountant General of the State, Mrs Joy Enwa, and a retired general, Rear Admiral Peter Eluma, in its governing council. He listed other eminent members to include Prof (Mrs) Ebele Joyce Egwunyenga, Prof Patrick Oromareghake and Dr Roland Oritsejafor, and expressed optimism that the team will enhance the university management’s RAISE UNIDEL higher vision.
