The Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ Warri Correspondents’ Chapel has lamented the deplorable roads in the state. In a communique issued at the end of its Congress held on 10th February, 2026 at its new secretariat at High Chief Government Ekpemupolo Press Centre, Eburu Road, in Okumagba Layout, Warri and signed by Communiqué Drafting Committee which was Chaired by Chido Okafor, Elo Edremoda(Secretary) and Samuel Ogude and Onyeka Meluwa were members respectively, the Union is worried about the state of many roads in Delta State. Although, many flyovers and roads are being constructed and rehabilitated in some parts of the state by the Delta State government, many roads have not been touched.
The roads that are crying for rehabilitation include Isaba–Otutuama Road, Ophorigbala–Ighwurogu axis in Ughelli South Local Government Area, and Idjerhe Roads in Ethiope West Local Government Area. The road that is of urgent attention is Eburu Road in the Okumagba Layout, where the Union’s new Secretariat is currently located. The Union therefore appealed to the state government do the needful in this regard to put smiles on the faces of Deltans as that would further boost the socio- economic life of the people in these areas.
Part of the statement reads:” The Chapel specially appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, through the relevant agencies or local government authorities, for the urgent repair of Eburu Road in the Okumagba Layout, where the Union’s new Chapel Secretariat is currently located.” The Union however, expressed gratitude to Delta State Governor Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori for the roads he has done so far especially the ongoing construction of flyovers/bridges at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Junction, DSC Roundabout, and Enerhen Junction in Warri and Effurun as these projects will significantly ease traffic congestion and enhance socio-economic activities within the state and urged him to continue in this regard.
The Union also raised alarm over the deteriorating conditions of healthcare services in the state saying that, many general hospitals lack the requisite facilities to adequately attend to patients. According to the body, in avoidance of doubt, the Dentistry Department at the Ughelli General Hospital is nothing to write home about as the chairs and tables are broken and urgently require attention. The body therefore urged the Commissioner for Health to tour the Heath facilities across the state to address the inadequacies therein.
NUJ Warri also laments the High cost of accommodation rents in the state adding that the exploitative practices of most house agents, whose actions/activities have compelled landlords to increase rents arbitrarily—sometimes yearly and, in extreme cases, monthly— has worsened the hardship faced by residents across the state.
Part of the statement reads:” The Chapel, therefore appealed to the Delta State Government to intervene in the housing sector by setting up a committee to look into the exploitative rent practices, with a view to alleviating the burden of the people.
“We urge the government to emulate the Lagos State model, where government and landlords meet often to create rent payment system that is pliable where tenants are permitted to pay house rent for a minimum of six months depending on their capacity.” On the 2027 general elections that draw near, the Chapel called on the state government to ensure a level playing field for all political actors. According to the body, in the spirit of transparency and public trust, it calls for the real-time electronic transmission of election results, a process that has gained widespread public acceptance and is widely regarded as a safeguard for credible elections.
The body used the medium to commiserate with the family of deceased colleagues in the pen profession among whom are late Godwin Brotu, who until his demise, was a member of the NUJ, Warri Correspondents’ Chapel. The Union also extends its condolences to Mr Sunny Ariegue over the passing of his mother, Mrs Office Christiana Ukerume and Mrs Njideka Igbani on the demise of her father, Hon. Reuben Chukwudiebele Agba just as it prayed that God grants the families of these departed, the fortitude to bear their irreparable losses.
