Nigeria Union of Journalists,Delta State Council has urged the Delta State Government led by Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to set up Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in the state as a result of flood which has ravaged many parts of the country to save their lives.
In a communiqué issued by the Union at the end of Congress held at Press Centre, Maryam Babangida Way, Asabà, the state capital on Tuesday, 29th October, 2024 said, the IDP Camp should be established in the three senatorial districts that make up the state as this would be help flood victims just as it said, relief materials should be sent to those affected while continuous sensitization should be made to the people to play safe in flood-prone areas.
The NUJ Congress which was presided by the State Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe also urged the state government to, based on the prevailing economic hardship, should direct that the free days being given to civil servants to exclusively reserved for farming purposes to further create a special farming scheme for civil servants to boost food security in the state.
The Communiqué which was signed by the Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe and Secretary, Comrade Victor Sorokwu further urged the state governmen to, as a matter of urgency, regulate the activities of touts masquerading as housing agents whose activities have and still lead to arbitrary increases in house rent in the state.
Part of the Communiqué reads:”As a way of ensuring the safety of motorists and pedestrians in the Asaba Capital Territory, Congress-in-session urges the state government to address the issue of missing or vandalized concrete slabs and manholes on our roads, especially within the Asaba metropolis, as their absence poses a grave danger to lives”.
According to the Communiqué, the state government should urgently look at the activities of the various task forces in the transport sector that are saddled with the responsibility of collecting levies, especially from tricycle operators otherwise known Keke as their actions have led to an arbitrary increase in transport money on the citizens who are already facing challenges of high fares in the state.
The Union also appealed to the state government to fully implement and enforce the already signed laws, such as the Public and Private Properties Protection Law 2018 ( DEVE), Anti- Open Grazing Law 2021, and others to encourage more investors in the state to invest as this is one of the ways high-level of normalcy can be restored in the state.
