It was a day of jubilation and fun-fare as Ighogbadu Secondary School, Warri, in Warri South Local Government Area Delta State organized her 3rd Inter-House sports competition. The programme which took place in the school premises was unique in its perspective.
Speaking at the occasion, the Principal of the school, Mrs. Ajayi Edirin said sports are very important for humanity of which students form a part as they form good exercises. She said, involving students in sports is part of psychomotor domain just as she said; they can help to discover students’ talents which can be harnessed for the students do well in life after leaving secondary school. She said:” Sporting activities are integral part of humanity because all of us need exercises because they help to prolong life”.
She therefore advised students to take sporting activities seriously just as she urged parents to encourage their children to take sports seriously by providing sports materials for them as nobody can tell what future holds for him in this regard.
According to her, the school has grown in all ramifications within the few years of its existence saying, there are still teething challenges facing the school at present. She said, among other needs, the school does have enough teachers, classrooms, desks as these are needed because the school is moving to Senior Secondary School One (1) by next academic session. She said the students of the school have performed creditably well in different areas both academically and sports -wise since its inception three years ago and hoped to double its growth and development by the years ahead.
She said:”When the school was established three years ago, there were no teachers but by the grace of God, there are few teachers but the school needs more because we are going to the Senior Secondary School one where there would be students.”
The cheerful and hardworking Principal therefore appealed to the Delta State government to help provide the school with enough teachers, enough classrooms, desks, among others for the students to enhance effective teaching and learning in the school by the next academic session.
She said:” We are using this medium to appeal to the Delta State government to help us provide enough classrooms, teachers, desks, and educational materials for effective teaching and learning to take place because by next academic session, there would be Senior Secondary School 1(One)
Mrs. Edirin used the medium to express gratitude to Mrs. Rose Ezewu, the Hourable Commissioner, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Asaba, Chief Mrs. C. Etaluku, Executive Chairman, Post Primary Education Baord (PPEB), Asaba, Mrs. Harieta Obiegba, Chief inspector of Education(CIE), Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Field Office, Warri, Mrs. Onorien Arawore, Director PPB Zonal Office for their support for the growth and development of the school so far just as she thanked the Host Community and the parents for their co-operation over the years.
She also thanked the teachers for their support saying, left alone, she cannot do it all. While thanking God for the success of the programme, she said, although it was meant to be low key because of lack of funds, it turned out to be great as the turn-up was enormous adding, by the grace of God, next year, it would be greater than this.
She said:” We give God the glory, it was earlier meant to be low key because there was no fund but the programme recorded huge success and by the grace of God, it would more than this next year”.
The Inter-House sports competition which featured four houses namely: Red, Blue, Green and Yellow thrilled the spectators with cultural dances from different groups namely: Itsekiri, Igbo, Urhobo and Izon among others climaxed with the presentation of prizes/awards to Blue House which emerged as the overall winner amidst cheers.
