In order to beef up security as the Nigeria’s 2023 gubernatorial elections draw near, the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Usman Alkali Baba, psc(+)NPM,NEAPS, fdc, CFR, has ordered the immediate distribution of additional batch of uniforms, kits, accoutrements and anti-riot equipment comprising bullet -proof vests with armored plates, ballistic helmets, long and shot- range tear-gas for civil disorder management and stun guns.
According to him, this is to ensure the officers appear in clean uniform and is well-suited to discharge their duties professionally before and after the elections. In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi mnipr,mipra, said the immediate distribution of these equipment is necessary for the general safety of all and sundry across the country.
The statement said, this distribution is as a result of the recently procured batch of the items to cater for the welfare of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force. The statement reads in parts: “…the items to cater for the welfare of officers and men of Nigeria Police Force as preparations are on top gear for the forth- coming general elections, to optimize professionalism and friendly engagement in crowd control as well as subduing of any civil unrest, and maximally adopt modern technique of curtailing crimes and criminality.
While the Inspector General Of Police charged his officers and men of the force to exhibit discipline, decency and respect for fundamental rights while on their duties, he said, he will not let them down as his administration will show commitment by continually providing the needful and upgrade the operational capability of the Force at all levels in order to completely stamp out crimes and criminality in the country during 2023 general elections.
